Playing
Chimes in Church
at St. Daniel Catholic Community
— look carefully at the picture!
Notice that the chime is held lower than you may have learned in school. In school they may teach you to put your thumb on the ledge because you play in a smaller space.
When you play in a large space like the church you need to hold the chime lower to produces a fuller sound that is loud enough for such a large space.
Again, notice how the chimer on the left holds the chime lower on the metal tube, not with the thumb on the ledge as you often do in school.
When instructed to be READY, this is the position to be in.
Strike upward! Stop it sharply either under or to the side of the microphone, depending on your position.
Positions
follow the keyboard - from left to right:
C D E - F G A/B.
In these positions chimers are less likely to strike each others chimers since
chimes who are next to each other rarely get played at the same time.
The
DAMP:
When a chime rings beyond the measure - into the next chord
on beyond the end of the music - or when a chime is indicated to be"dampened"
on the music page, the chimer stops it from ringing by touching his or her shoulder.
Below two ways to dampen your chime:
